PRIDE vs. LOVE

“This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.
Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”
John 15:12-13

“Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.”
Colossians 2:8

Pride is the opposite of love. Pride is an enemy. Pride is a tool used by Satan to keep us distracted from the truth and love of Jesus. I think we should replace the word pride with thankful and pleased. The scriptures clearly teaches that Jesus is The Creator and “all things were created by Him, and for Him.” (Colossians 1:16) Everything we have was given to us by Jesus. How can we be proud of something we did not create? I love my son more than life itself, but to say I am proud of him implies I created him and every good thing he does it because of me. I love to teach him new things and watch him grow and learn, but God gave him life and the ability to learn. I am so grateful and thankful that God blessed me with him, but the glory is God’s, not mine. I think we can learn a valuable lesson from the baptism of Jesus.

“And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
Matthew 3:16-17

If God did not see fit to be proud, then certainly we have no reason. I think telling our children we are pleased with them is a great way to express our love, acceptance, and thankfulness for them instead of promoting pride.

The world teaches we should have a lot of pride in various things, but especially ourselves. And sadly, many ministries are teaching the same. Some of the ministries I have heard try to explain it as love. They use the phrase self-love, but take a look at the below definitions and it is clear that self-love and pride are equal.

PRIDE
1: the quality or state of being proud: as a
a: inordinate self-esteem : conceit
Merriam-Webster.com

INORDINATE
1 archaic : disorderly, unregulated
2 : exceeding reasonable limits : immoderate
Merriam-Webster.com

SELF-LOVE
: love of self:
a : conceit
b : regard for one's own happiness or advantage
Synonyms: pride, pridefulness
Merriam-Webster.com

Based on the above definitions, pride is exceeding reasonable limits of self-esteem. Notice the synonym for self-love is pride. Pride and self-love are equal! The teaching I have heard from the world and some well known ministries is, “you have to love yourself before you can love others.” Jesus, The Creator, did not teach self-love and pride. Jesus, The Redeemer, lived His earthly life with humbleness and faith (Phil. 2:8), not pride and self-love. Jesus commanded us to love as He loved. Let us take a look at what the Bible says about pride and love.

“For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.”
Mark 7:21-23

These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:
A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,
An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief,
A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.
Proverbs 6:16-19

Jesus, The Creator, listed pride as evil! There are many other scriptures that warn about the dangers of pride, but Jesus taught us with complete clarity. We all struggle with pride and I am no exception, it has caused me much grief and sorrow in my life. The thing that concerns me is so many people teaching that we need to have more pride. Do we really want to promote more selfishness? Does a wife want to hear “Honey, I love me!” from her husband? No, we all want to be loved and appreciated by our family, friends, and even strangers.

“Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.”
Matthew 22:36-40

The commandment is “love thy neighbour.” It does not say love yourself so you can love your neighbor. The commandment has a given like in a math equation. The given is you already love yourself. (Ephesians 5:29) Loving others is where we lack and need help and guidance from the Spirit of God.

The kind of love Jesus commanded us to love with is a love that comes from God. A love that flows through us from Jesus. It flows from Jesus because Jesus is love. (1 John4:8) Jesus commanded us to love one another, as He loved us. (John 15:12). So how did Jesus love us….

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.”
John 3:16-18

Jesus gave His life for you and me. He was willing to sacrifice His life for you before the foundation of the world. (Ephesians 1:4) God was not taken by surprise by the fall of man. He gave man free will, but knew that man would sin and rebel. How great is the depths of the love of Jesus to know all these things before the foundation of the world and still not only choose to create, but to take on human form, live the perfect life, and then willingly lay down His life for you and me. He provided Himself as the sacrifice for our sin to provide a way for us to eternally live in the presence of God. All of the descriptions of love listed in 1 Corinthians 13:3-13 are perfect in the Resurrected Jesus today and when He was here on earth in the form of man. They are perfect in Him because He is love.

Pride takes, love gives. Put your belief, faith, and trust in Jesus and let the Holy Spirit guide you in love.

“I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
John 15:5

“I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”
Philippians 4:13

Jesus wants us to put our faith in Him. Pride is having faith in yourself. Jesus wants us to love Him and love our neighbors. Self-love is destructive and causes much pain for ourselves and even more pain for our family, friends, and neighbors.

The Golden Rule:

“Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.”
Matthew 7:12

WHY TO BELIEVE IN JESUS

There are many reasons to believe in Jesus: eternal life, forgiveness of sins, peace, joy, truth, and true love.

Eternal Life

Only Jesus can give us eternal life, because He is the only one with life to give.

“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”
John 14:6

Jesus is God and The Creator; this was clearly shown in the previous blog, The Word of God. Only The Creator of life can give eternal life. It cannot be earned, it is a gift of love from God that requires only you believe in Jesus.

“Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved”
Acts 4:12

We are spiritually dead until we accept Jesus and are born of the Spirit.

“Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.”
John 3:5-6

“God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.”
John 4:24

Keep in mind, it is the fault of man we are born spiritually dead. It was man that rebelled against God and caused the problem of sin and separation from God. When God finished the creation on day 6 “it was very good.” (Gen. 1:31) Only when Adam and Eve disobeyed God did sin and death enter into the world. Jesus is the one who fixed this problem.

“Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.”
Romans 5:12

“For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”
Romans 3:23

“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
Romans 6:23

“And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.”
Hebrews 9:22

The wages of sin is death and the sin issue has been dealt with by Jesus. This was His purpose. He laid down His perfect life to forgive our sins. He paid the price for you and me. Then through His resurrection, He defeated death and offers each of us eternal life.

“For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.”
1 Corinthians 15:22

“And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.”
1 John 5:11-13

THE WORD OF GOD

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.”
John 1:1-3

“And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.”
Revelation 19:13

Both of these scriptures are about Jesus. Jesus is the Word of God. The opening verses in John tell us several important facts about Jesus. They establish that Jesus is God, Eternal, and The Creator!

Wow!! Now read Genesis 1:1

“In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth.”
Genesis 1:1

Jesus is also defined as the Creator in the first chapter of Colossians and Hebrews:

“For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.”
Colossians 1:16

“God who at sundry times and in divers manners, spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things by whom also he made the worlds; Who being the brightness of glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;”
Hebrews 1:1-3

My friends, make no mistake, Jesus is God. The scriptures are very clear on the subject as shown above. It is also clear as stated in 1 Timothy and very clear by the words and miracles of Jesus himself.

“For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.”
1 Timothy 2:5

Moses and God talking:

“And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them? And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you”
Exodus 3:13-14

Jesus speaking to the Pharisees:

Art thou greater than our father Abraham, which is dead? and the prophets are dead: whom makest thou thyself? Jesus answered, If I honour myself, my honour is nothing: it is my Father that honoureth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God: Yet ye have not known him; but I know him: and if I should say, I know him not, I shall be a liar like unto you: but I know him, and keep his saying. Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad. Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham? Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.
John 8:53-58

Another exchange with Jesus and the Jews:

I and my Father are one. Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him. Jesus answered them, Many good works have I shewed you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me? The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God
John 10:30-33

The Word was made flesh

“And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.”
John 1:14

“Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of the antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.”
1 John 4:2-3

“Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God.”
1 John 4:15

Jesus is God and let now man convince you otherwise.

“God forbid yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged.”
Romans 3:4

TRUE LOVE

“Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.”
1 John 4:10

“Master, which is the greatest commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.”
Matthew 22:36-40

“He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.”
1 John 4:7

Jesus Christ is truth and love. I grow tired of hearing the worlds philosophy of love. They often talk about love, but they never seem to get it right. When they speak of love it is always about loving yourself. The world tells us we need to love ourselves more before we can love someone else. That is not how The Word of God defines love. The fact that you love yourself is a given and evidenced by the scripture when is says, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.” The problem is we love ourselves too much! It should be Jesus Christ that we speak of when defining true love, not ourselves. We cannot have true love without Jesus in our hearts. The important thing to understand is how much Jesus loves each of us and accept the free gift of His sacrifice, love, and grace which is forgiveness and eternal life in the presence of God. Only when we give up our pride and turn our lives over to the Creator, Jesus Christ, for truth and guidance will we be able to love another person properly. Understanding God’s love for us means we understand that God loves all people equally. Jesus died for all the sins of the world. We all need His grace equally. The scriptures tell us “There is none righteous, no, not one” (Romans 2:10) Focusing on loving ourselves more only results in more pride. “Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.“ Proverbs 16:18 Jesus gives us love. Let us follow the example of the author of Love, Jesus Christ.

IN DEED AND IN TRUTH

“My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.” 1 John 3:18

That is a great and powerful scripture. Truth is a requirement of love. We can not have confidence in another persons love toward us if they are proven to be liars. Lies can be very subtle sometimes and the truth difficult to discern if we do not have the proper foundation. Let us consider some relevant scriptures.

“In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;”
Titus 1:2

“He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.”
1 John 4:7

“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:”
2 Timothy 3:16

We now know that God defines love and tells only the truth through his Word. So where do the lies come from? Jesus answers this question when he was speaking to the Pharisees about the devil.

“Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.”
John 8:44

So we can conclude that if someone is giving us advise or making statements contrary to the Word of God, it is a lie and that lie is from the devil. The same lie the devil told Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden is still being used today to deceive and draw people away from Jesus Christ who is the only way to eternal life and the kingdom of God. Lets take a quick look at the lie in the garden.

“And the Lord God took man, and put him in the garden of Eden to dress it and keep it. And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.” Genesis 2:15-17

“Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.” Genesis 3:1-5

So here is the tactic of the devil…cast doubt on what God said and then say the complete opposite. Well God was right. He always is. Doesn’t stop the devil from continuing to spread the same lie through false teachers throughout the world even today. The scriptures warn these false teachers will be among us.

“But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.”
2 Peter 2:1-2

“I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season, reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.”
2 Timothy 4:1-4

So here we are approximately 6000 years after the creation and we have a clear present day example of the same lie and false teachings the scriptures warn about. Consider the below comparison of present day teachings that are marketed as positive and motivational, but in truth are a lie and heresy, to the words of Jesus Christ.

DR. WAYNE DYER QUOTES COMPARED TO WORD OF GOD:

A Conversation with Wayne Dyer
By Ellen Mahoney, NaturalAwakeningsMag.com

Mahoney: When we look at our own lives and think about the lives of loved ones, what is key to living a healthy, happy, love-based life?

Dyer: The key is to trust in your own divinity, to know that you are a piece of God, and that you are like what you came from. As a spiritual being, you have Divinity within. When Albert Einstein was asked about the impact of quantum physics, he said, “It’s just all details, I just want to think like God thinks.” And God thinks in terms of creating, kindness, beauty and goodness.

"...Feeling worthy of any blessings or desires is a feature of your inner life. Here are the major perceptions of those who know they are worthy and deserving of all of God’s blessings:

* My self-esteem comes from myself. (As a child of God, my worthiness is a given.)
* I accept myself without complaint and without conditions.
* I take full responsibility for my life and what it is and is not. (I blame no one.)
* I do not choose to accept guilt into my life. (I live in the present moment.)
* I understand the importance of having harmony between my thoughts, my feelings, and my behavior. (This harmony translates into peace and contentment.)

There is nothing your highest self wants more than peace. This peace makes you feel worthy of all of the richest blessings of the Universe, and when you radiate this out into the world, it is returned to you without fail."

BREAKDOWN:

Dyer: "My self-esteem comes from myself."

BIBLE: "Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you." 1 Peter 5:5

You Are God: An In-Depth Conversation with Dr. Wayne Dyer
By Ray and Loree Hemachandra, Pure Inspiration
http://www.drwaynedyer.com/articles/you-are-god-an-in-depth-conversation-with-dr-wayne-dyer

Hemachandra: So, just to be really clear, what’s the biggest thing people need to learn in order to help them get beyond the excuses?

Dyer: They need to know that they are God. We mostly do not recognize that. We’ve lost the sense of our own divinity. We think that we’re separate from God, but we can’t be. We must be like what we came from, and we came from an infinite, loving, kind, beautiful Source. We’ve forgotten that. So, you have to recognize that God isn’t something outside of you—a cosmic bellboy to whom you pray in order to get this or that if you do the right things. Those kinds of understandings are all ego talk. Everybody—you, me, Osama bin Laden, Adolf Hitler—we all came from the same Source. Then we took on these egos and began to practice all kinds of things based in not having reverence for life, whereas that which is God has reverence for all life. All excuses are nothing more than misalignments with God. Just imagine the great creative Source needing an excuse. It doesn’t have any concept of, “I’m too busy. I’m too old. I’m too afraid. Things are going to take too long.” Source doesn’t work like that. The Tao does nothing, Lao-tzu writes, but it leaves nothing undone.

BREAKDOWN:

Dyer: "They need to know that they are God."

BIBLE: "For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;" 1 Timothy 2:5

Another important issue to consider in regards to the teachings of Dr. Wayne Dyer is he uses generic terms such as Source and God, but does not as far as I have found mention Jesus Christ. The scripture tells us exactly how to identify the true Spirit of God.

“Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that is should come, and even now already is it in the world.”
1 John 4:2-3

“ Whosever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God.”
1 John 4:15

Who is Jesus?

I believe Jesus is God and was God in the flesh when He walked among us. Make no mistake about that statement, He is NOT just a god or path among many to choose as your route to heaven. He is the only way. Jesus said “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” John 14:6 His invitation does not exclude anyone. Jesus said, “That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.” John 3:15 There are many people today teaching the direct opposite of that powerful message from Jesus. The world tells us choose whatever path you want, they are all correct and will lead you to heaven. Really? How can that be. Nothing else in this world is that easy. And if that is the case….would heaven be any different from the world we know today? I don’t like to think of heaven being filled with active murderers, rapists, and thieves. The scriptures and words of Jesus are perfect and tell us all we need to know about who Jesus is. Slow down and take some time to read and ponder these verses.

Some of the names for Jesus in the Bible:
The Word, Light, Lamb of God, Son of God, Son of Man, Christ, Messias, King of Israel, Bread of Life, Good Shepherd, Master, Lord, True Vine

Verses about who Jesus is:

….Again he high priest asked him, and said unto him, Art thou the Christ, the Son of the Blessed? And Jesus said, I am: and ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven. Mark 14:61-62

And when the centurion, which stood over against him, saw that he so cried out, and gave up the ghost, he said, Truly this man was the Son of God. Mark 15:39

And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. Luke 1:35

And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased. Luke 3:22

And in the synagogue there was a man, which had a spirit of an unclean devil, and cried out with a loud voice, Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, Jesus of Nazareth? Art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art; the Holy One of God. Luke 4:34

And when he saw their faith, he said unto him, Man thy sins are forgiven thee. And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone? Luke 5:20-21

He said unto them, But whom say ye that I am? Peter answering said, The Christ of God. Luke 9:20

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. John 1:1-3

The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. John 1:29

Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. John 5:39

And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world. I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins. John 8:23-24

Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me. John 8:42

Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had found him, he said unto him, Doest thou believe on the Son of God? He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him? And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talked with thee. John 9:35-37

Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again. No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father. John 10:17-18

I and my Father are one. John 10:30

Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well, for I am. John 13:13
